Smart Growth America seeks a Government Affairs Associate to assist in research, advocacy and outreach on behalf of promoting smart growth policies in the U.S Congress. The Government Affairs Associate will report to the Director of Government Affairs and Outreach, and will work to engage members of Congress and staff on the federal policy agenda of Smart Growth America as well as work directly with agencies and organizations around the country on capacity building and knowledge sharing about smart growth implementation. Job responsibilities will include:

• Monitor relevant legislative issues and report key developments to the Director of Government Affairs and Outreach.
• Attend relevant congressional and coalition meetings, hearings, issue briefings, etc.
• Develop messaging materials for members of Congress, including one-pagers, sign on letters, and e-action alerts.
• Schedule and attend meetings with congressional staff.
• Engage with national, state, and regional organizations that support Smart Growth America’s legislative priorities.
• Reach out to and engage local communities on smart growth issues and their work implementing smart growth practices locally.
• Work directly with agencies, local leaders, and organizations to educate them about smart growth and build them into a network.
• Monitor and update a website for the network, create and post content and engage members around coalition building, messaging, and various smart growth/planning issues.

The ideal candidate will have minimum two years government affairs experience, a strong understanding of the legislative process, and organizing, advocacy and/or customer/constituent relations experience. Excellent organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills required. Knowledge of smart growth issues preferred. Hill or federal advocacy experience is required. This position is located in Washington, DC. Compensation Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Smart Growth America has a generous benefits package.
