Smart Growth America Interns sought for Summer 2008

Smart Growth America is looking to hire several interns for Summer 2008. The internship can be crafted to suit the interests and skills of individual, but would provide valuable advocacy, research, and organizing experience. An intern would assist in work on one or more of the following projects:

Complete Streets: a campaign to fundamentally transform the look, feel and function of the roads and streets in our community, by changing the way most roads are planned, designed, and constructed.
Climate: an initiative to help cities and states address global warming with smart growth policies and include smart growth strategies in federal climate legislation.
Coalition Building: providing resources for and building SGA's coalition, which currently includes more than 100 national, state, and local organizations. A list of our current members can be found here.
Transportation Equity Network: a coalition working to ensure equitable transportation and land use policy.
Transportation Policy: a campaign to ensure that the next federal transportation bill addresses climate, equity, and community development concerns.
Vacant Properties: a campaign to provide communities with information resources, tools, and assistance to support their vacant property revitalization efforts.

Specific responsibilities may include::
• Conduct research and analysis on smart-growth related topics, including the link between global warming and land use policy.
• Help manage website content and write e-newsletters
• Policy tracking and analysis on the federal and state levels
• Communication with SGA's coalition partners
• General administrative tasks, including meeting coordination and database management.

Requirements: This position requires a self-motivated and detail-oriented person with excellent communication and organizational skills. The candidate should be highly computer literate with specific experience or a willingness to learn database management and website maintenance. Candidates must have exemplary research and writing skills. Familiarity with, as well as strong interest in, smart growth is a plus. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Compensation and Time Frame: Internships are 40 hours a week for 12 weeks.  Flexibility on time commitments can be arranged with the intern's supervisor. While internships are unpaid, we are happy to explore fellowship or credit opportunities where applicable. SGA does provide transit benefits.
