Smart Growth America Internships

Smart Growth America has several types of internships available at all times, including:

Smart Growth America Policy Internship: Assist with federal smart growth campaigns, including on global warming, affordable housing, and transportation. Responsibilities include conducting research and developing fact sheets and other materials.

Smart Growth America Coalition Internship: Assist with coalition and state partner engagement, logistical work for meetings and trainings, and maintaining coalition website. Work with state campaigns director on maintaining coalition database and records, researching, drafting and compiling materials, and conducting outreach to possible new members. Other responsibilities may include drafting policy materials, blog posts or other policy and communications work.

Transportation for America Internship: Smart Growth America recently launched a coalition effort to reform federal transportation law to dramatically increase investment in public transportation, inter-city rail, biking, and walkable communities. Responsibilities include conducting outreach to potential and current coalition partners, tracking transportation news and legislation, conducting research, and developing materials.

Governor's Institute Internship: The Governor's Institute hosts workshops for Governors across the country and their top staff on leading state smart growth policies. Responsibilities would include prepping for workshops, including conducting research on states, smart growth issues, and helping with materials for meetings.

Community Revitalization Internship: Assist with state and federal policy work, research on best practices and new initiatives, and information dissemination and outreach related to topic areas including vacant property reclamation, brownfields redevelopment, affordable housing, and community development.

Complete Streets Internship: The Complete Streets Campaign is dedicated to ensuring that all people — pedestrians, bikers, the elderly, children, and the disabled — can use our streets to get places safely. Responsibilities for this internship include conducting research and developing materials like fact sheets, prepping for technical assistance workshops, writing a monthly newsletter and updating the website, and helping to build support for Complete Streets legislation in Congress.

Communications Internship: Smart Growth America generates media coverage of development and transportation issues around the country. Responsibilities would include helping to draft media materials (such as letters to the editor and op-eds), tracking media coverage and news, and developing fact sheets and other materials to support SGA's campaigns.

Web/Online Organizing Internship: In addition to its website, Smart Growth America has several campaign websites, e-newsletters, a blog, and monthly action alerts. Responsibilities would include helping to update websites, write newsletter and action alert pieces, and explore new ways to take advantage of technology to advance smart growth.


REQUIREMENTS: These positions requires a self-motivated and detail-oriented person with excellent communication, writing and organizational skills. The candidate should be highly computer literate with specific experience or a willingness to learn database management and website maintenance. Candidates must have exemplary research and writing skills. Familiarity with, as well as strong interest in, planning and smart growth is a plus. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Compensation and Time Frame: Start and end dates and work hours are flexible based on the intern's schedule. Summer interns are expected to work 40 hours a week for a 10-12 week period. Fall and spring interns are expected to work between 10 and 40 hours a week for a minimum of 10 weeks. Interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between SGA and the intern's college or university. All interns are subject to the applicable SGA employee rules.

The internship stipend will be based on the following schedule: Full time (25 or more hours a week): $300 per semester, Part time (10-24 hours a week): $150 per semester
