EPA ANNOUNCES TWO NEW SMART GROWTH INITIATIVES

Smart Growth America today praised Governor Christie Whitman for her most recent contribution to the smart growth movement: the announcement of the Administration’s renewed commitment to smart growth, and two new smart growth initiatives sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

At the New Partners for Smart Growth Conference in San Diego, Governor Whitman announced, “It is my pleasure this evening to emphasize that the Bush Administration – and the EPA especially – understands the importance of Smart Growth as well and we are looking forward to working with each of you to achieve our common goals for smarter growth throughout the Nation.” She insisted that, “Addressing new environmental challenges requires us to manage all of our resources better – economic, social, and environmental – and manage them for the long term. That is why Smart Growth is so important.”

Demonstrating her commitment to smart growth, Governor Whitman announced a new effort to help communities better integrate brownfields redevelopment and open space preservation with their smart growth strategies through grants and technical assistance. Governor Whitman also announced the establishment of a National Award for Smart Growth Achievement, which will recognize communities and individual leaders who have been innovative and successfully applied smart growth principles.
