The briefing’s panel will feature:
More than 500 jurisdictions at the local, regional and state levels are now using Complete Streets policies to build stronger economies and support healthier and safer communities.
Many of these communities are pursuing Complete Streets implementation to meet a growing demand among residents for transportation choices and homes and employment centers in walkable areas. Other communities are motivated by public health and safety concerns.
At the national level, though overall roadway deaths fell by two percent from 2010 to 2011, pedestrian deaths increased by three percent and bicyclist deaths by nine percent over the same period. Of the 47,000+ pedestrian fatalities from 2000 to 2009, 67 percent occurred on federal-aid roadways.
This briefing will explore the safety, health, and other benefits of Complete Streets, and how federal legislation can assist states and localities using this approach. It is free and open to the public. Please RSVP with EESI to expedite check-in. A live webcast will be available for those unable to attend in person.
