Smart Growth America seeks an enthusiastic candidate to support our work with State Departments of Transportation, and our transit-oriented development programs.
Position description
An ideal Program Associate is a great writer and a flexible, adaptable team player who is interested in working on a broad range of issues and tasks related to transportation and transit-oriented development (TOD). This person will assist in delivering technical assistance to State DOTs and TOD communities—managing the logistics of developing, organizing, and executing workshops, taking notes, summarizing outcomes and preparing follow up next steps memos. The Associate will also participate in the preparation of grant and loan packages for financing transit-oriented development. This position may also assist with short-term research and analysis projects, prepare grant progress reports, and provide short-term assistance to other programs as required.
Responsibilities
The Program Associate’s primary responsibilities will be to support SGA’s state level transportation work and SGA TOD efforts. Specific responsibilities will include:
- Researching and writing white papers, reports, and memos
- Organizing and helping to deliver technical assistance workshops, including recording workshop proceedings and preparing follow up memos and reports
- Writing and assembling TOD funding applications for loans and grants
- Prepare grant applications and progress reports
Requirements
This position requires a self-starting, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, research, and organizational skills. A degree in public policy, urban affairs, planning, journalism, law, real estate, environment or other field related to community development is preferred. In addition, a successful applicant will also:

- Be comfortable juggling multiple assignments and managing their own time
- Be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of Adobe Design Suite a plus
- Remain dedicated to delivering high-quality work
- Have a personal interest in smart growth development strategies
Compensation and location
Salary commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC. Benefits include health insurance, 401(k), and paid vacation, and sick time. This position reports to the Vice President for Economic Development.
