About
Transportation for America, a program of Smart Growth America, is a national initiative working to create a transportation system that safely, affordably, and accessibly connects everyone to jobs, services, and opportunities through diverse travel options.
The problem we're solving
Americans want a transportation system that gets them where they need to go safely and efficiently. Unfortunately, federal transportation investments for the last several decades have failed to develop a system that can accomplish this one, essential task. No matter how much we spend, traffic, emissions, and pedestrian deaths only seem to increase. It’s time to admit our current strategy isn’t working and reorient our investments around what actually matters to everyday people.
A new vision for transportation
T4A is bringing people together to create a better transportation future. We're working with leaders at all levels of government to develop a new approach to transportation investment that is:
- Accountable: We believe that every dollar spent on transportation should deliver real results.
- Measurable: We track progress and hold ourselves accountable for achieving our goals.
- People-centered: We focus on solutions that make a positive difference in people's lives.
We're confident that by working together, we can build a transportation system that safely, affordably, and conveniently connects people to the places they need to go.
The State of the System: Tracking transportation data
The federal transportation program spends more than $75 billion per year. Yet it’s incredibly difficult to determine what this money is accomplishing because federal transportation data can be impenetrable, confusing, and scattered across a host of government websites and reports.
With Transportation for America’s interactive State of the System (SOS) data hub, we have assembled and synthesized foundational transportation data that can help you understand how your tax dollars are being spent, and what—if anything—has been accomplished with the $1.5 trillion spent on transportation since 1991, so you can better hold Congress, state DOTs and other transportation agencies accountable.
