Advancing racial equity
Our country has a sordid racial history of wielding transportation, development, housing, and other governmental programs in ways that harm and divide communities of color. SGA prioritizes racial equity by seeking changes to all of these programs and policies to restore and repair that damage and ensure that benefits accrue more evenly to everyone, especially those who have typically been left out.

How we’re improving racial disparities using a smart growth approach
Smart growth initiatives build racial equity by focusing on improving fiscal health and social equity. SGA aims to address and equip advocates and political leaders with the tools they need to create more equitable outcomes within transportation, housing, and land use and development plans and practices.
Repairing past inequities and presenting smart solutions
Smart Growth America is dedicated to facilitating policy change to enhance equity and sustainability in smart growth, focusing on initiatives like the National Complete Streets Coalition, which advocates for policies that ensure streets are safe for all, support local economies and cultures, and promote inclusive, multimodal communities.
This includes establishing standards, providing training, and producing content to advance the cause of inclusive transportation planning.
