The country is short millions of homes, and families across the country are struggling with rising housing costs. Too often, zoning restrictions, lengthy approval processes, and other barriers make it harder to build the homes people need, especially in places where people want to live with good access to jobs, transportation, and daily needs.
Governors have an important role to play in changing that. State governments can remove barriers to housing construction, encourage development in places with existing infrastructure, put underused public land to work, and help local governments meet growing housing needs.
Smart Growth America's new state briefing book outlines four actions governors can take to increase housing supply and improve affordability, with examples of states already putting these approaches into practice.
