Our mission

Our mission is to make Complete Streets the default approach to building and managing transportation systems across the US. We uplift best practices and equip champions to support ending traffic violence and to create communities where all people have safe, accessible, and convenient ways to get to where they need and want to go.

Our vision

We believe that the streets of our cities and towns must allow all people, regardless of age, ability, income, race, or ethnicity, to safely, comfortably, and conveniently access everything they need by foot, bicycle, public transportation, or other preferred mode of transportation. A community’s street network should reflect the overall vision for its mobility future and support public health, environmental resilience, and economic development for all members.

What we do

The National Complete Streets Coalition produces programs, resources, and advocacy efforts supporting the following principles:

  • Prioritize street design: Elevate safe, accessible, and equitable street design as the primary tactic to reduce traffic deaths and support mobility independence.

  • Challenge the norm: Hold decision-makers, with a focus on those who control our most dangerous streets, accountable to their commitment and efforts to shift the policies, systems, and funding structures from those that support divisive transportation to those that support Complete Streets as the default approach.

  • Highlight community success: Replicate local-level community-centered efforts to tackle traffic safety, public health disparities, climate challenges, economic vitality, and other intersecting issues.

Program of work

Complete Streets is an approach to planning, designing, and building streets that enables safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities. We consider it to be the backbone of a healthy community.
